Measure P is a carefully targeted ordinance which pertains only to the growing or raising of GMOs and will not affect the sale or consumption of food with GMO ingredients. However, news of the measure has made lots of local residents curious about the broader issues surrounding GMOs. Therefore, in the interest of public education, the Yes on Measure P campaign is helping to bring several distinguished speakers to Humboldt County to talk about various aspects of the broader GMO debate.
The second speaker in the series is Dr. Michael Hansen. Dr. Hansen is a Senior Staff Scientist at Consumers Union, a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the rights of consumers and the publisher of Consumer Reports magazine. Dr. Hansen is an expert on food safety issues. He represents Consumers Union and other organizations at international fora on food safety. Among many other prominent roles, Dr. Hansen has served on the USDA Advisory Committee on Agricultural Biotechnology, the California Department of Food and Agriculture Food Biotechnology Advisory Committee, and a FAO/WHO Joint Consultation on Genetically Engineered Animals. Dr. Hansen will speak on “Are Genetically Engineered Foods Safe to Eat? What Are the Risks, and Who Ensures Safety?” at the following times:
- Friday, September 5th, 7:00 pm at Humboldt State University’s Native American Forum in Arcata
- Saturday, September 6th, 4:00 pm at Bear River Community Center, 266 Keisner Rd, Loleta
